The Symantec NS/SMP Agent for Unix and Linux v7.x requires full root privileges to run correctly. Modifying or reducing the root user privileges is unsupported and may cause the agent to fail, hang or stall during various processes including:

  • Installation (push or manual with aex-bootstrap or native packages)
  • Agent upgrades
  • Manual configuration using aex-configure
  • Agent startup process using rcscript or the /etc/init.d/altiris commands (after reboot or manual startup)
  • Agent uninstallation
  • Any other agent process

The following is unsupported but may server as a workaround:  use 'sudo' even while logged in as the root user in order to gain full root user privileges when manually running various commands. Examples of processes that may require sudo include:
  • sudo aex-bootstrap nsservername
  • sudo aex-configure -iconfigure
  • sudo aex-uninstall -f
  • sudo rcscript restart

In some instances, it may be necessary to manually start the agent using the following command. Once the agent is running under these privileges, it should function normally.
  • ‘sudo aex-pluginmanager –D’

Note: The NS Agent for Mac is not affected in this way.
